[Solved] Kia Oil Change

I noticed the dealer when they changed the oil in my 2021 Sorento used a tube inserted in the dipstick hole. I assume they know what they are doing  but does that method get all the oil out. I am thinking the draining through the drain plug is the best way since it is at the bottom of the sump. They have to remove an access plate anyway to get at the oil filter.

You want to drain and fill, it’s not that hard.  If the Hyundai/Kia dealer is that lazy about changing the oil, imagine what other things they will cut corners on esp. when it comes to warranty repairs.

dealer mechanics are paid a reduced rate for warranty repairs. No tech likes doing warranty work, so it usually goes to the low guys on the totem pole and you can bet they won't be happy about it. There is no incentive to do a good job.

They do it because:

  1. it's faster, so they save money on labour cost
  2. Kia can't trust their mechanics not to f*&% things up. This way they don't have to touch the drain plug
  3. they don't have to remove all the oil, so they save money on material cost

it's bad for your engine because

  1. it doesn't get all the oil out. And really what's to stop them from only removing 3/4 of it.
  2. the heavy contaminants (water, metal, carbon etc.) that sink to the bottom of the pan stay there. The pickup for the oil pump is in the oil pan.
  3. you cannot assess the condition of the engine if you don't see what comes out of the pan

One of the problems Kyundai had with their engines, which eventually causes complete destruction, is metal debris in the oil. I can't imagine how this procedure is going to help that problem.

It's just a lazy man's way of changing oil a lot of dealers do it cuz they're lazy but it's wrong you should change it by removing the drain plug and getting all the crud out. Just pure laziness so they can change them faster and not as well

Just a lazy way to do it and not really correct. Typical Hyundai/Kia dealer.

Nothing is free.

Never assume the stealership knows what they are doing, excepting sleazy attempts to empty your wallet.

Thanks

It was free with the cars first inspection. I had to to top the oil to get to the middle of the dipstick. Took about a 1/2 a quart. Since there are no more free inspections it will be the last time they see the car. I changed the oil myself in June.

Smart move on checking the oil level, right after they changed it.

Funny thing.

When I bought the oil filter for the change I made last summer they included the replacement aluminum washer for the drain plug. It comes in the Kia/Hyundai OEM box. I guess they have a draw full of them at the dealer left over from all those vacuum suck oil changes. Bet ya if I wanted one they would charge me for it.

The Kia service manual specifies changing the oil by draining through the drain plug.

A moderator on Kia's own forum claimed there was no reference to the drain plug in Kia's service manual.

Isn’t that image referring to the drain bolt of the oil filter itself?

The top picture on the right is the bottom of the oil pan. The caption underneath refers to the next picture which is cut off.
