2005 Nissan Sentra Lack of Power and Low RPM when in Reverse or Drive

Hello,

I have a 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8l automatic with 156,600 miles. For the past few months, I have lacked power when pressing the gas pedal. When I stop, the rpm drops to almost 0, so I shift into neutral to prevent any possible stalling since it brings back the idle speed to normal. In addition, I also have a P0420 code, and I wonder if that has something to do with a noise I hear coming from the engine.

it sounds like a hissing noise and is most apparent when I have my blinkers or hazard lights on as the hissing noise follows that same rhythmic pattern of the lights. Any probable causes to lead me in the right direction?

Thank you, Scotty, and all for your time and wisdom!

I forgot to mention that what I would like to find out is why shifting into neutral brings my idle back to normal and shifting into drive or reverse lowers it to almost stalling.

In neutral there is no load on the engine.

The car is 17 years old, when is the last time air filter and gas filter were changed? Is fuel pressure OK? What do the spark plugs look like?

You should also scan the car for live data that might provide some clues.

The air filter was changed when I bought the car at 151,000 miles six months ago. I replaced the air filter again two months ago and checked on it periodically. The spark plugs I am confident are in good condition from pictures I've seen online.

I'll have to check the fuel pressure and find the fuel filter's location. The Sentra forum doesn't help with the fuel filter either. Thank you for the pointers!

Check for intake leaks.. most commonly on those the intake boots tear between the air box and the throttle body which will cause a stalling and or lack of power condition

Check your transmission fluid level and have the CAT tested for blockage.

The transmission fluid was changed three weeks ago and is topped off. I'll get the CAT tested for blockage; thanks!

Check also the main vacuum line between the intake manifold and the brake booster for cracks and leaks.
