Leaking timing chain cover

Hey, Scotty. Got a 2005 Chevy Equinox with 212K miles. It is leaking coolant. I had my mechanic pressure test it and he said it's either the water pump or the timing chain cover. I replaced the water pump and it was leaking but there is still a small coolant leak coming from the area near the crankshaft pulley. I'm assuming it must be the timing chain cover. How can a timing chain cover leak coolant? Thought it was just motor oil.

Timing covers don't leak coolant.  If the water pump was replaced, it's either defective or the gasket got pinched during installation.  Needs to be removed and re-done.  Also, check your hose connections in the area.

Not always the case, timing cover gasket on my car (GM 3800) has coolant passages in it for the water pump. It could leak coolant there if the gasket were to fail. Quick google search looks like the equinox may have a similar design.

@nta98 - Good call! Thanks. Most cars don't.
