Recently my cousin bought a 2020 Honda CR-V EX and she wants to install LED Headlights (did not want to pay the added price for a Touring just for LED lights). When researching ones for her I noticed that all of them had a statement saying that they were not street legal for off road use only. Researching more I saw that technically you cannot switch out a halogen bulb for LEDs as it was not made for that, therefore, illegal. Is this really true or just a statement they have to put out there for technicalities? If everything is fine, what brand of LED headlights would be best for her? Is one with a CANbus adapter needed? Thank you.
For the CR-V specifically, it’s higher trims have an LED array, which is part of the headlamp assembly itself.
If it’s got a projector setup, I’d just leave it alone or instal some really good quality HID bulbs and leave the high beam halogens as-is.
I’m not too sure about installing aftermarket LED bulbs in a projector.
If you want to try it though, Scotty recommends this -
It is technically true, but it is not enforced (there’s no law in the States on that). Worst case the oncoming driver in adjacent lane (e.g. two-lane road) might flick their lights at you, so it’s important to pick the right assembly/bulb and adjust it properly. It might be best to buy a whole headlight assembly (with LEDs) and install that; but if you don’t want to spend that money and just want to replace the bulb then I recommend Headlight Revolution.
They have quality LEDs, but not cheap. However, they test all their products in wide variety of vehicles and publish in videos for consumer to see. You can even email them and ask what bulb will work best in your vehicle. Or can click on link here to see what they have for your vehicle:

Keep in mind not all LED assemblies/lights are created equal. Even if you don’t buy from Headlight Revolution, their video below shows what to look for in selecting the proper LED bulbs, such as beam pattern, brightness, fitment, cooling (LEDs can get very hot), wiring.

A lot of those say that. I'd assume it's to protect the manufacturer from liability. Some states have laws prohibiting you from modifying your car from factory components. I bought some on Amazon for my G6 and they work great. I only paid about $25 for a pair. When you install them, make sure you check the alignment. I had to move the headlights down a little so that I wasn't blinding other drivers. I've never been bothered by law enforcement about any lighting on my vehicle, and most of what I bought on Amazon had some kind of statement similar to that.
