Wife is finally ditching her Hyundai and has told me she either wants a RAV 4 or a Crosstrek. For me honestly I’m good with either pick but wanting some opinions. And please DO NOT  say RAV 4 just because it’s a Toyota.

2 good choices. RAV4 costs a little more and is made a little better. Drive them both and see what feels better. If you can’t decide, go with the one with the more reputable dealer.

my wife has a 2019 RAV4 and loves it

says great visibility, didnt have any trouble getting her 91 yr old father in/out

air conditioned seats, about as close to heaven that you can be down south

I haven't tried a Crosstrek, so I have to go by pictures.  I like the dashboard on the Crosstrek a lot better. The Rav4 one was terrible and I had to kink my back just to see all the buttons.

I found the Rav4 seats VERY uncomfortable, and getting into it wasn't the greatest either.

If you are looking Subaru, I think a more appropriate comparison would either be the Forester or the Outback.  They seem to be closer to a RAV4 in size and scope.  A Crosstrek may have been comparable to a RAV4 many many generations ago, but not the latest RAV4.

I would compare a Crosstrek to a Toyota Corolla Cross or CH-R.  There isn’t an exact comparison, but those seem closer in size and scope to each other, IMHO.

IMHO, Subaru has the more functional user interface, for the AC and Entertainment Controls. Toyota is all over the place with theirs, whereas Subaru seems a little more consistent across the board.

While the RAV4 may look higher off the ground, rumor has it the Forester or Crosstrek is actually higher than the RAV4. I never measured it myself, just saying.

I love the idea of the boxer engine in the Subaru’s. The engine is more flat than tall.  It helps keep the center of gravity low to ground, for more theoretical stability.  My only hesitation with it is come maintenance time, changing those spark plugs is a little bit of a chore to access. But hey, how often do you have to change spark plugs?

You will also get more for your money in terms of features with Subaru, as Toyota’s and RAV4’s are priced a little higher for added features.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Toyota and the RAV4, but sometimes, the features and brand isn’t enough to justify the cost.

I have had both. In all honesty, you won’t hate either one. But… I would go RAV4. Here’s why:

The crosstrek is slow, sometimes so slow that it can’t even get out of its own way

the crosstrek is small and not just length or width but also floor to ceiling height. Good luck getting anything tall inside

the crosstrek may be AWD and a good one at that, but it feels like you are driving a car and not an SUV

the crosstrek only gets mildly better gas mileage in most situations compared to the regular RAV4 (hwy mileage on long trips the most I have gotten in the RAV4 has been 31 the crosstrek has been 40.
