Lesser Of Two Evils ?

So my mom is looking to get a very large brand new SUV but still keep her Honda Civic as her gas saver. Either a Chevy Suburban or Ford Expedition since she drives an hour to LA 3 days a week and she doesn’t feel safe driving in that heavy traffic in her little Civic. I know GM in general is crap and the Ford Expeditions have those crappy turbocharged V6 ecoboost engines. Which one of these would be the “least terrible” ? She already tends to trade her vehicles in and buy new ones every 5 or 6 years or whenever they hit 100k miles anyway, so does it even matter ?. She thinks the Toyota Sequoia is “too ugly” smh.

Clarification: brand new or used (which MY)?

She’s buying new

I would actually do the Suburban for the V8 and pass on the Ford. EcoBoost motors are awfully unreliable in big SUV's like that.

They are ugly, but I'd still rather drive an ugly SUV than a broken one.

Ford would be better if she absolutely has her mind set on one of those two.  If you can have her get a CX-9 or Sequoia.

Is she buying new or used??

Look at the Mazda’s......they’ve cut a deal with Toyota to use their technology.....

Toyota Sequoia is the best one.

The GM quality is horrible but this question got asked to Scotty before and he said the Chevy was a bit better but honestly I don't think either of them is worth the money.

Though I'm not a fan of the turbo 4 but its better than those two so what about the CX-9?

The Sequoia is the top choice though, Mazda second. I'd pass on Honda, Subaru, and Nissan large SUVs as all of those have very weak automatic transmissions.

Of the 2 the Ford would be better.  I  still wouldn't do either.

If looking at new only, the Chevrolet Suburban just came out with MY 2021 being the first year, so there will be first year issues/bugs to work out.  The Ford Expedition at least has been out since MY2018 but it has the 3.5L Ecoboost with the 10-speed AT which can be problematic.  Both have bumper to bumper 3/36,000 mile warranty and they are both full of tech (and both are not known for reliable electronics), so she would be on the hook for repairs beyond that time/mileage without extending the warranty which is more cost.  That being said, it’s hard for me to recommend either of them.  Meanwhile, has she looked at the Lexus GX, the Lexus LX, or even a Mazda CX-9?  Those will all be a more hassle-free experience for her.

Going new between the two. The pragmatic side says go with the Ford, because it is a couple years into the generation, so the kinks are supposedly ironed out. But the adventurous side says go with the Chevy, because it’s the new body style. Haha.

TBH, if she really isn’t to the whole Toyota Honda longevity and reliability thing, take which ever one of the Ford or Chevy she likes better. She is getting rid of it in 5 years anyway.
