Longevity Years and Mileage: What are your longest running vehicles?

Topic starter
  • What is your longest running vehicle(s), in terms of years and mileage?
  • What model year is it, and what year did you get it?  What year did you let it go, if ever?
  • What mileage did you get it at, and what mileage is it now?
  • If you were to divide (cost of vehicle / years) and (chose of vehicle / mileage), how would that stack up?
  • Lastly, anything major that you needed to fix, besides basic maintenance?  And if you did finally let it go, what was the reason why?

Bought a 1989 Nissan D21 brand new, 4 cylinder manual. 485,860. New clutch at 371,000. Sitting in it right now picking granddaughter up from school.

@oldandy
Amazing. A thirty year old car still going. Bravo!!!

When your clutch wore out, what symptoms did you notice? I am pleasantly surprised it went that long without a new clutch!

If I remember correctly, I could hear it squeal when I shifted

Looking to buy or just curious? Haha mine happens to be me ma's toyota corolla of 2001 model year. Was at 224k miles before being crumpled into a tin can by some asshat. Woulda lasted longer too if not for that. Other than that there was a 2008 honda fit I saw that had rolled into the shop with over 320k on the odo and as far as I know everything was original except for general maintenance. And a few electrical issues here and there.

@bruceree
Just curious! And if I am ever on the market for a brand new or brand new used car, I hope to be informed.

@bruceree
I'm sorry the Corolla got crumpled. I'm sure it would have lasted longer.

Yeah it was unfortunate, brand new cars as far as I've seen at least are "too new" which trying to put a tablet in every car and those seem to always cause more electric issues as well as how convenient push button start is, I hate it as it's a total pain to change if the system fails and not to mention it is easier to steal a car with push button start. I like to wait a couple years for brand new cars to to find the most common issues cause like you I also love to stay informed. If you buy brand new, the warranty should essentially cover an major problems but still, I would just not rather deal with em if I know my current shit box still runs and drives ya know lol for older cars on the flip side the hassle is a bit more cause no one is completely honest most of the time with the vehicle if you are buying from a previous owner. Dealerships for second hand are even more shady as they buy for a 3rd of the price you are gonna pay them for "kbb prices". I always get my cars checked out since I like buying used cars.

2004 Toyota Prius, 295K miles, brand spanking new.

Minor issues at 200K+ mileage include:

Include both water pumps.  The inverter water pump dropped a code.  But the ICE water pump was just leaking.

The rear hatch handle broke off, and was replaced.

I changed out the visors, the rear hatch struts, and the door checks, as they all weakened over time and usage.

Sadly the biggest repair was the hybrid battery this year during quarantine/lockdown.  TBH, if I had been driving the car regularly like a normal schedule during this time, I think the battery would have gone a bit longer.  The car would have gotten the exercise batteries need.

So far so good.  I know there will be major tune up coming up soon.  Spark plugs and possibly ignition coils.

Our family car is a 2009 Kia Sportage. Bought it from a rental company in 2010 right now still have it have absolutely no issues 130.000 miles. The newer ones are junk but this one has a 2.0HyundaiBeta Engine you can find these will 200.000 miles easily.

We did the timing belt one time and thats it. These had somewhat cheaper interiors and not as good of a ride as let's say a CR-V but they are extremly inexpensive the 4cylinder ones from this generation run forever. Im pretty sure we bought for around 10 grand when it was 1 years old.

Sounds like a good deal, considering it’s age!

Yep!
