I'm in the market for a used car (Toyota or Honda) and I'm looking for a trustworthy mechanic that can do a pre-purchase inspection(s) and fairly priced maintenance on the used car I plan on buying. I live near downtown LA, close to USC's campus, and would like to find somebody with 10 miles or so that I can count on.

FWIW, if you are looking for a BMW specialist, I've gone to two guys:
Johanns Independent. Just be patient with how they deal with customers. The guy tries to deal with multiple customers all at the same time, while on the phone trying to get parts. Fair pricing too, especially for BMW's. They do mainly BMWs and Euro.
