Scotty,
I have a 2010 Ford F150 4x4 XLT. The truck has 155K miles on it and I am the only owner. It has the typical "Maine" rust for a truck it's age. My wife and I are debating about replacing it for something that will haul our 32' travel trailer better. Mechanically the truck is still "ok" (typical issues with trucks this year 4x4 actuators, front end components, and gas miles has dropped considerally since new. from 19-20 GPM to anywhere from 10-13 GPM) We are trying to decide between and SUV or another truck. Question is, should we do this and get tied into a payment for something newer, or continue to work on the truck. We are trying to stay within the 1/2 ton range, or Tahoe, Yukon style SUV. What I see right now is to stay in a halft ton and have decent tow rating I would need to go to a 22 or newer. I really don't want to pay the prices they want for something that is 2 years old (Dont really want to pay the price of any of them right now lol). Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Love your YouTube page!
What is the (approximate) loaded weight of your trailer? Towing a 32-footer with any half-ton is a tall order.
If you want something better but you don't want a heavy duty truck, the best option would be a previous generation V8 Tundra. Toyota doesn't make a 3/4-ton, but they made the Tundra to be something of an in-betweener. They tow better than their official tow rating would suggest on paper. However, Tundra prices tend to be very distorted, so there is probably not an ideal solution.
On the other hand, trailer prices have REALLY softened in the last 6 months. Would you be up for trading for a smaller trailer? Going down to 28 foot with a gross weight of under 10K (preferably around 8K) pounds might make your current truck a more viable option.
Thanks the trailer is marked as a 28' (but actual length with tongue is 32). Completely empty it is listed around 5500 lbs. With all our stuff in it, probably looking more towards 6k or just over. Haven't taken it to a scale to be sure.
That’s pretty light for a big trailer like that, so you have a lot of options. I’d probably keep rockin the truck you have but keep your ears open for a good deal on a tundra.
Hmmm it's a 50 50 situation here. F-150 at 155k miles is still ok but you have to keep an eye on the transmission cause they always tend to wear out at 150 to 200k miles. Our 2018 Chevy Silverado Tranny went out at 120k miles. We rebuild the tranny and sold that sucker. We got a 2024 Toyota Tundra. Prices for trucks are crazy expensive now and market/demand is high. Just take care of your F-150 and keep driving it you never know maybe it might last 300k miles. If you plan on getting a truck I would recommend getting a tundra. 2020 or 2021 model. Because the newer tundras from 2022 and above have those twin turbo engines and there engines are known for having problems even at low as 10,000 miles. Good luck.
Thanks Shone200. Biggest issue with my current truck is the " New England Cancer". Had the rockers and corners fixed once and the guy did a hack job.
Ok and your welcome.

As long as the frame is fine, that stuff is purely cosmetic and could be repaired if you choose. My father-in-law has a rusted out, 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 turbodiesel, but the frame itself is almost spotless. We live in Ohio, and we get all 4 seasons, sometimes all 4 in a week in the wintertime, haha.
