Loud Noise and Diff Knock in Rear!

Hello everyone,

I’m writing to you today with regard to my 2007 Ford Mustang. The car is a V6, a manual, and has just over 100k on the odometer. Currently there is one heck of a racket coming from what I perceive to be the rear, video of the noise attached. I’ve owned it for nearly ten years and have taken exceeding care in service and maintenance. I am in the military and took my car for service back in April to the on-post Firestone for tires, trail arms, and new bearings.

During this time I saw mechanics take off what I think was some sort of axel collar. There were still some squeaks after the work, but I assumed it was the new parts settling in. For reference the car has been out of the shop for what I believe is less than 1500 miles since this work was done, and I rarely drive more than a mile or two an average day and rarely leave the post.

The issue in question is a loud whine from what I believe might be the differential. This is a rotational or centrifugal noise and sounds akin to somewhere between a nest of angry bees and a miter saw at different speed and revs. The reverb from whatever is causing the  noise has come to harmonize with the whole cabin, making it quite loud.

Moreover taking the car out of gear sees the care maintain speed and the wind of what I assumed is the transaxle or diff keep spinning despite the gearbox being in neutral.

Worse yet is coming to a stop, something in the back is still clicking and knocking briefly. This happens regardless of braking to a stop or coasting to one. Reversing the car has a similar effect on the rear where the noise seems to be emanating from.

I am not entirely unconvinced shoddy work on the part of the mechanics at Firestone is responsible for this. Arriving there again today they seemed completely nonplussed by return. I gleaned from they’re reaction they already had some idea what was wrong.

Any help would be not appreciated and I thank everyone in advance. I’d really like to avoid dumping another two months salary into this poor thing.

These chain stores are just not competent to do anything but sell you tires.  Do not let them ever do mechanical work on your vehicles.  Find an independent mechanic to check you rear suspension, including play in the ring and pinion gear, and u joints.

Yeah it sure sounds like the rear differential needs rebuilding or replacing

Holy cow! The King himself, what an honor!

I actually heard back from them today, sir. Both the drive shaft and the differential require replacement. This is only 1500 miles or less after the differential was “serviced” and the pinion seals were replaced.

I find the coincidence bizarre, sir. If there’s a correlation I might be able to argue for free repairs.
