Manual Transmission Fluid Change

Topic starter

Hi Scotty, 2003 corolla, 1.6, manual transmission, 140k miles.

I want to change my transmission fluid, as I don't know when it was last changed if at all.

Since it's a manual which is splash lubricated, there can be no harm by replacing it.

My question is which fluid should I buy. I know it should be 75w-90 gl-4 or gl-5.

I would have preferred to use OEM fluid, but I can not find any.

There seems to be some controversy about gl-5 and synchro wear.

(I am leaning toward either the Mobil1 75w-90 synthetic or Castrol sytrax universal plus 75w-90)

Is there a specific fluid which is definitely good to use?

You need to call Toyota and ask them because if you put the wrong stuff in there it could cause you all kinds of problems. All trans fluids are different and I don't want to tell you wrong and if your going to change it now is the time.

Not to be picky or anything, but manual transmissions use oil, not a fluid. Anything with a weight specification is an oil 🙄

@razmigb

oil is a fluid

I would use Castrol

@scottykilmer

So this would be good?

@scottykilmer
I am going to go buy some myself for my Nissan Truck. I need it for my trans 😀
Thanks for digging it up for me 😀

I think you didn't notice, but Scotty didn't dig it up. I asked if it was suitable.

Yep... Synthetic Castrol is a good choice.

Make sure to get all the old stuff out. You can chase the dirt out of the bottom with some diesel as the manuals will collect some metallic junk in the bottom.

Clean the drain plug good as these are usually magnetic and there will be metallic mud on it.

Let it drain thoroughly and fill with the synthetic.

I think the Toyota c50 transmission has a non serviceable magnet inside.

You may be right... I have not seen this. Most magnets are in the drain plug so you can check metal accumulation during service intervals. If you do not have a magnetic drain plug, you can buy and add one. Its a good upgrade.
