Hey Scott, my son has a 2011 toyota rav4 limited with 114000 miles on it. It has 2ar-fe motor and we have to add a quart of oil every 350 miles. It's not smoking or puddling under the car. He bought it used with 94k miles on it. Any ideas. Is a rebuild or short block worth the cost.
Price out the cost of replacing the engine versus replacing the vehicle. I would also verify that it's not just leaking instead of burning, maybe use some UV dye in the oil.
I see only these ways to 'massively loose engine oil':
-the car leaks when parked > there will be stains or a puddle below it.
There will be loss of oil despite not being driven.
-the car loses oil when driving: oil is pressed out of a running engine, passes seals/gaskets and will spread oil over the block
-the car loses oil when driving: oil is burned in combustion, the remnants escape by the tailpipe as blueish smoke, the tailpipe end might be sooty too.
When 1 or 3 are not the case, I would clean the outside of the block (degreaser) and fill up oil to a definite point (and registering it) and add an uv-dye to the engine oil. (as suggested already)
BTW: did you look at the underside of the car? Is it coated with oil??
BTW2: do you use the right engineoil for your car (type, viscosity)?
