Should I become a diesel or gasoline mechanic?

Hey Scotty I hope you and your family is doing well in Tennessee. I’m an up and coming mechanic in trade school but I’m torn between being a diesel or gasoline mechanic any reason why one is better than the other besides diesel mechanics getting more money? Thanks.

I am a Service Manager at Speedco. We do Road calls, tires, and PM services for Diesel engines. I can tell you that our Mechanics get paid really good plus commission. Most of the customers do not own their trucks so dealing with a driver is not a big issue.

Thanks for the response!

I would go diesel.  More of a specialty, and should be in service for a while.

Thanks for the info!

As a diesel mechanic in the States, you’ll probably be dealing with commercial vehicles mostly, and may skip the tantrums of having to deal with personal car owners.

Also, like you said, you can charge more.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info, I was also wondering wouldn’t it be easy to find training to work on gasoline engines: I’d like to do this so I can work on my own cars.

It should be. Ask around..

gasoline engines are probably a bit cleaner and physically lighter.

The mess around the shop from doing just a tire repair or a basic oil change can be shocking but the experienced become less messy. I have man hands with fingernail polish most days. lol

Which do you find more comfortable to work on?

I went to school and then was just not comfortable working on other people's cars.
