Melted (?) Red wiring next to fuse box

Topic starter

2011 Chevrolet Traverse AWD 3.6L V6 LLT 200000KM automatic transmission.

Melted / damaged red wiring next to fuse box. No drivability issues. See pictures. But yesterday when I shifted from Park to Drive or to Reverse there was a thud sound. But the sound has not reappeared.

Recently I changed my power steering fluid using the turkey baster method multiple times. I didn't put my engine cover back on. That may have melted the wiring?

What is it for?

It looks home-made and very poorly done.

I don't know. I didn't put it on.

does the car have any accessories that probably didn't come from the factory?
An alarm ... sound system ... lights ... etc.
Did you try following the wires to see where they lead? (both directions)

Not that I can tell. No I haven't

Did you buy the car used? That is certainly not original, maybe a previous owner did that. Try to find the other end, its its not connected to anything I'd remove it.

No, driving without an engine cover would not melt a wire, so you can rule that out. Unless without the engine cover being there allowed the wire to rest on the exhaust manifold or something.

As far as the thud, usually when automatic transmissions thuds coming out of park, its when the car is parked on a hill and the weight of the vehicle is on the parking pawl inside the transmission. So, if you were parked on an hill when this happened, that's probably why. Whenever I park on a hill with an automatic car, I set my parking brake, so the weight of the car is on the brake and not the transmission.

the car owner has a different topic started for his transmission issue. Lets not mix things up too much until the wiring is solved.
