Scotty.
Back in 1984, when Iacocca ran Chrysler and Reagan ran the world, I bought a Chrysler New Yorker. It was powered by a “Mitsubishi Jet” 4 cylinder engine.
I loved that car, it was perfect for our family; nimble but not so fast as to be crazy (wife + 2 kids). I babied it to about 120 thousand miles, then the Chrysler stuff started going bad, but the engine and drive train were still solid. I let it go, but still have a soft spot for that car.
what happened to Mitsubishi? Are they still around?
Yea they’re still around. Just no longer sold in the US. They pulled out of the US Market.
Oh, Mitsubishi has been making aircraft since before your passenger jet. They were the maker of the “Zero” Japanese fighter from WW 2.
Mitsubishi is certainly still around in the US.
They currently have a line of crossover SUV's, the Outlander PHEV hybrid, and the Mirage and Mirage G4.
While their vehicles in the past were always behind the others on the market, they have made a lot of progress.
The Outlander went from one of the worst rated crossovers to 8th in the enormous pack according to C&D. The Mirage has been perfected and with a standard transmission is a great car for those looking for it, and the Eclipse Cross has gotten a new redesign and the Outlander Sport crossover got a styling update.
So in conclusion, is Mitsubishi still around in the US? Definitely. Do you have to work a little to consider one when buying a car? Definitely. But the future is bright for Mitsu. There are rumors of a return of the Evo, and their stock has jumped from its all time low in Q1 2020. I personally believe they will bring the L2000 to the American market as well, since the compact truck market is gonna heat up with the Maverick.
Y'all can say Mitsu isn't the best quality, but they're better than Nissan and they always make cars that are different, not chocked full of ridiculous tech, somewhat reliable, cheap, and interesting.
And I like that.
Mitsu says only that it will be “pulling back” from North America. Last year it sold 120,000 vehicles in the US. It will instead concentrate its efforts mostly in Southeast Asia. It goes along with Renault's larger plan to divvy up the world between the brands
Thanks for the downvote. That’s a straight copy paste.
@thumpy I don't understand why you're so upset about a downvote in the first place, but what you said in your original post is completely unfactual. Any person in the US could go get a brand new Mitsu from the dealer.
I have the right to downvote any post I want. It's your problem that you're getting so offended that someone else's facts disagree with your out of touch opinion.
Take it easy, man!
I’m not upset. The remaining Dealers near me can’t get new inventory so believe what you want.
yea mitsubishi still here unfortunately they dont care about what people want....
so much potential tbh they just need evo, lancer and full size galant back and leave the cvt for the mirage/hybrid/ev
all they gotta do is re design them every few years, put a real trans in it and add more life for it...
That’s too bad. That little 4-cylinder engine was great as far as a small engine is concerned. Guessing like many in the West Pacific, it makes more sense, at first glance, to deal with China. Short-sighted on Mitsubishi’s part, but true nonetheless.
