  1. I was looking at vans from the chevy astro and full size conversion vans. I ended up buying a 1999 chevy astro with a rebuilt engine and trans 70k miles ago its an automatic trans and the chasis has 282k miles on it. There is no check engine light and it's not leaking anything but my power steering fluid is going somewhere but not on the ground. Where could it be going?

It has to be going somewhere. So it's leaking out the lines or the hydroboost system and pooling up somewhere. Check the out the forum in my signature. The kind folks there will help you out.

It’s likely leaking around the power steering pump or steering rack. If you get under it with a flashlight look for wet and shiny around the pump. It’s probably burning off before it makes it to the ground.

The Astro has pitman arm steering, not rack&pinion. But the steering box would show leakage.

You sure? My wife’s 2001 Safari had rack and pinion. Same van. Did they switch between 99 and 01?

Yes I'm sure, and your wife's Safari wouldn't have come with R&P steering from the factory.

Well it did, I bought it with 4k miles on it. You can look up a replacement steering rack for it right now. Did some digging out of curiosity looks like they did switch over between 99-00. Found some with and without. Kinda weird.

GM Service Info describes pitman arm steering right up to 2005. I have never heard of a rack on an Astro, and I frequented an Astro forum for years. My own 2000 didn't have it. Rock auto doesn't list a rack for the 2001 either.

If it exists, it's rare as hens teeth.

Actually I think it has something to do between the FWD and AWD models. Which they didn’t make many AWD ones. Not really sure. I believe you. Not saying your wrong at all. I just know hers did. Like I said, weird. Typical GM. Lol

Mine was AWD, and there were quite a few.
