Moose Test

Hi Scotty,

Can you tell us what makes a car pass Moose Test and do AWD cars perform better in the test even though most of them have higher clearance, aka Subarus? I think the world record belongs to a very old Citreon to this day and big brands failed in the test miserably including Porsche, Toyota and famous Mercedes A series.

Thanks,

N

Good suspension design.

do AWD cars perform better in the test

Better than what?

most of them have higher clearance

As far as SUVs, it depends on the SPECIFIC car model.

But there are lots of stupidly WELL handling SUVs as well. (Time stamped videos:)

Even 7 seater large SUVs.

And smaller SUVs too

Neither are not even the much better handling sports variant.

That's outperforming "good handling sporty sedans"

And there are lots of very POOR handling sedans

And POOR handling sports cars

Most SUVs are average.

Some Swedish magazine claimed that it got 85kmh, but the myth was tested and busted

Having driven the final variation of the Citroen HydroActive suspension system - steering ain't good on those.

Yeah, some manufactures had some models fail.

Toyota has attempted to solve the handling issue you mentioned on the RAV4 with a very questionable solution

The only companies I know of who actually conducted moose tests on their vehicles were Saab and Volvo. (Using moose test dummies.) That was years ago. Saab is obviously long gone and Volvo is now owned by the Chinese, I have no idea if they still do that kind of testing.

Very nice Videos, thanks! @chucktobias @dan

I really like Toyota, but I understand why some people pick a car for different reasons. My little matrix hugs the road well, but my old 98 4Runner was not so great.

I have heard many people that got hondas liked the way they handle, same with a friend that picked a Rogue over a Rav4 or CR-v.
