dear Scotty, I currently own a 2005 Camry le. I’ve had it for a couple years and I am now at 160k miles. I try my best to maintain it as I’ve heard it is very reliable and can last forever. I have 3 kids and I’m expecting a fourth. We can’t all fit in the car. I was considering getting a used highlander or 4 runner which I think has a 3rd row but I’m not sure what’s the best year or if used is the way to go. Should I get a brand new car from the dealer? Lease or finance? I’m looking for economy, best bang for the buck. Something like my Camry but bigger. I need reliability. And I don’t want to spend a lot. I really need your help, i highly appreciate your advice. Thanks, Gabe from Florida.

I love my Toyota Sienna. Plenty of room for 4 kids in the back and all of our junk. Pickup and drop off at school is a breeze with the rear sliding power doors. We bought ours used (from a dealer with an extended warranty, just in case) and it has never given us any problems. Just keep up with the routine maintenance and it should go 300k or more.

I can't comment if the Toyota Highlander is the most reliable SUV but it is one of the better ones.

If you are considering the First Gen which ran between 2001 - 2007, I would recommend looking for model years 2005 - 2007 with the V6 engine as they have fewer problems.

common problems I made note of during my purchase. The water pump craps out around 100000 miles, make sure that’s replaced. Look for the Valve cover gasket, if that’s leaking it can cost you 500$ to fix. The shocks can get spongy around 150000 do check that. The alternator can go bad if the battery wasn’t changed from time to time.

If you are considering the 2nd gen consider buying the ones that were made in Japan, their VIN starts with a J.

you can watch these videos to get a better idea:

Avoid the hybrid models like the plague(usually have more problems with battery and rear diff) and if you don't see yourself using an AWD system go for the 2WD version (lesser headaches).

Other than that I would recommend taking it to a known independent mechanic. And sit through the whole inspection so that you know what you are getting into.

Look into buying a used Honda Pilot, Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Sienna. I know those have a lot of space and are reliable. Avoid the Honda odyssey’s there are known for transmission problems. there could be more cars but that’s from the top of my head. Look up Scotty he probably has a video for a cheap family car

Why do not you consider a van instead of SUV? Toyota Sienna gives you the best practicality.

I also would say the Sienna would fit your needs well. You may want to at least test drive one.
