I've seen a few questions on here about motor mounts. Do those things really wear out so fast? Do they go bad that easily?
Certainly depends on the vehicle. I had a 2008 MINI Cooper S convertible (that my wife bought brand new) that went through 3 sets (yes, three sets) of motor mounts by the time the car hit 50,000 miles in 2012. They were BMW oiled filled mounts that I guess did not hold up well in the heat of Phoenix, AZ; when they failed they left a nasty black oil all over the engine bay and the garage floor. On the other hand, I had a 2003 Ford F150 5.4L V8 and drove it to 288,000 miles and sold it in 2018 and the motor mounts were still fine. So really depends on the vehicle with research required.
Whoa. That’s crazy.
Scotty said that the motor mounts on the Focus are notorious for going bad.
Depends on the car as well as the quality of the mounts. I have an E55 AMG and an E63 AMG... I've replaced the factory mounts in both cars after they finally failed after 80k miles or so... E55 no issues with OEM mounts... E63 I opted to try a less expensive mount on amazon. Those less expensive mounts lasted 1 week or so... both cars are V8 and I drive rather aggressive. I ended up buying OEM mounts for the E63 and no issues at all for the last year...
I will say these are the only two vehicles that I have ever had to replace mounts in my lifetime... Jeep wangler and a Cherokee, BMW M3 and 740IL, Lexus SC400, ES 300, Miata, Eagle Talon, Ford F150, RAM 1500, Tiguan, MB C300, Saab 93T... all lasted without issue... that being said, none of those were cranking out the HP even close to the AMGs. Since 2006 I have only owned and driven AMGs and I don't foresee buying anything other than an AMG, even if I rip through a few sets of mounts, these put a smile on my face on the daily.
Dumb question. How do you they have failed? Or better yet, how do you know they are about to fail?
@kaizen
When you start seeing the engine move around abnormally inside the bay. Have your hood open, and just do short acceleration bursts in drive and in reverse while watching the top of the engine. If you see abnormal "jumping" or torsion (twisting/tilting motion) of the engine, then the motor mounts are worn out and should be replaced. But keep in mind that OEM mounts allow for SOME engine movement for ride comfort, but you'll know when it's bad.
Thanks.
Depends on your driving and the car also. Generally they last around 150k miles
It all depends on the design and some external factors like heat and oil which could shorten their life expectancy.
While watching some old videos, I encountered this. Yeah, I know I'm late⌛. 5:40

Depends on the vehicle. 4-bangers vibrate more.
I replaced one in my life. It was a used and abused 1972 Dart with 140k miles.
I never had much of a problem with older vehicles. The newer cars and trucks have mounts that seem poorly engineered and built. The rotational torque of the engines is constantly putting stress on them so keep an eye on engine movement.
