Hi Scotty,

I want to get a motorcycle for my 19 yo son who is going to college in a large metropolitan area. He's not a big kid but strong for his size. He's fairly new to motorcycles.

What brands, models , and engine sizes would you recommend.

Thanks,

Charlie Quay

down here in florida they scrape a motocycleist off the pavement almost weekly. the problen isn't the biker, it's the nitwits down here that pay NO attention to them. it doesn't matter if it's a moped or a full dressed harley. and this semi rural.

growing up in chicago, i had a bike and the big city is NO PLACE FOR A BIKE.

yeah, get him a car.

or lots of health insurance.

i kid you not.

people zipping in and out, buses, cabs, cop cars, all driving like idiots, bad news all around.

get him a dirt bike to ride in the bush to get comfortable first, before throwing him to the wolves in a busy city. He probably hasn't even learned to drive in traffic properly yet.

@MountainManJoe has a good suggestion there. A fall in the dirt hurts less than one on pavement. In addition, you can learn balance, braking, etc. before taking to the streets.

My brother started out on a Honda Shadow and he dropped it and was pinned under it the third day he had it. Now, he went on to be an expert rider with the Sheriff's office and has two Harleys to play with at home, so it was growing pains. But it wasn't a cool feeling to find him that day pinned a block from our house. I was glad I happened to leave not long after him. He was unhurt but the bike was scuffed a bit.

He and my father both ride and if there's one thing I've learned, it's not if you'll fall but when. If you have a place you know of that he can ride a dirt bike, you can pick up a used one for cheap and teach him the basics in a safe environment.

Get him a car. Not a smart idea to ride a motorcycle in city.
