My 2000 Toyota Tundra Limited 4.7L engine shuts off when I put into gear either Drive or Reverse, by not when I put it into Neutral.

My engine shuts off when I put it into gear; either D or R, but not when I put into N. -why?

The truck has a 185k. I actually had the the original transmission replaced at 40k before the warranty ran out back in 2004.

I’ve been told it’s a bad solenoid in the transmission or the Torque Converter by mobile mechanics. Truck 🛻 sits in my driveway.

What else can i do to deduct further.

Thank you for your time.

Have you already scanned the vehicle for any trouble codes?

Well when your vehicle is in neutral the engine free wheels. There's no strain on it but when you put it in reverse or neutral then it strains the engine in any problem can make it stall out. It could indeed be a problem inside the transmission, but it could also be simply like a vacuum leak, dirty fuel injectors. Anything that makes it strain too much so that it stalls out only when in gear. Good luck
