How do I fix Impala howling

Hello everyone and Scotty quick question I figured that I was starting to have a bearing problem hearing howling from my car as soon as i got above the speed of 45mph however me and my father in law who has worked on cars and trucks himself for years did the bad bearing test on all four tires and none of them budged any ideas where that sound might be coming from, I know Scotty mentioned the sound locator method but just figured I might as well get some ideas , my father in law thinks it could be the trans axel at the worst , I own a 2013 chevy Impala LTZ with 99,467 miles just to clarify.

If yours is the 4 speed automatic:

Pray that that’s not from your gearbox. That particular 4T65 (if I remember the model name correctly) by GM had a lot of issues with bearings inside the gearbox.

I’ve seen them whine and howl in certain / all gears as early as 60,000 miles. And they’re hell to disassemble compared to other gearboxes.

On the 6 speed I’ve seen Bushings (sleeves around the bearing) go bad but that’s not as common as bearings literally failing apart in the 4 speed.

thank you man, from the quick research iv done it is a six speed automatic so more than likely it might be the bushings , I am getting the transmission fluid drained and filled next week with brand new filter and gaskets , ill ask how it is to replace the bushings , but thank you so much @Dan , was worried this thing might be running into a fatal issue soon money wise .

Changing your transmission fluid is always a good thing.

I do not think with only 90,000 miles it should be an issue - if you don’t change your fluid for 150,000 miles then you can’t change it cause with new fluid it will just cause it so slip.

These trannies are well built I’ve seen them go 180,000 miles easily

ok sweet! , ill keep that in mind , thank you so much again @Dan

I noticed lol XD Thank you @G.T. for showing the video and thank you so much @ScottyKilmer , Ill be sure to try and get that device to really find out where the noise is coming and if it is the transaxle my father in law was thinking the same thing, it is way to expensive but if I found out it is the bearings we will get on that issue ASAP to get it fixed before any further damage is caused.

my apologies @ScottyKilmer and everyone should have written this in last message what is the name of that said listening device , figured I might as well ask an awesome community!

Thank you so much @Mountainmanjoe
