Need opinion on what new truck to buy

Hey Scotty,

Really love the content and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Question: if you had to purchase a newer truck (2017-current) in the Ford, Ram, or Chevy would you have a preference/ recommendation? I have a 2006 F150 XLT Super Cab (4.6V8) w 160K on it. Really solid truck and no major issues outside of natural wear and tear.

I need a new one in the next year and change to fit the family since the super cab isn't cutting it and have a little more comfort. and gong from an 06 to anything now is an insane jump in technology so its all going to be very different from my truck now. I go back and forth a lot between Chevy and Ford at the moment. Reason I ask is all of the issues I hear about from mostly every brand. I know its always a role of the dice with any car figured I would get an "if it were you, what would you do" opinion.

Thanks and god bless.

I disagree with Scotty, stay away from the Gen 3 Coyote 5.0 first used in model year 2018 and newer as they have had issues (see below)- plus the 2021’s now have cylinder deactivation - and the jury is still out on the longevity of their 10-speed automatic transmsissions.  Stick to the Gen 2 5.0 from 2015-2017.  Also, see below:

What our esteemed member @Mod_Man had to go through with his 2018 F-150 with the Gen 3 5.0:

If you’re sticking with 1/2 ton honestly for what you want to use it for I’d say Toyota Tundra. 1/2 ton market is weak for “US” automakers. Anymore I’d just get a 3/4 ton gas cause there’s better overall quality there with simple designed motors. I know it’s a little overkill for you but I’m embarrassed by what GM, Ford, FCA are calling 1/2 ton trucks. IF you absolutely have to choose between Ford and GM for a 1/2 ton I can’t believe I’m saying this but buy the chev w/ the 5.3. Fords redesign for the 3rd gen 5.0 is absolutely a trash pile. Now if you happen to find a 2nd gen 5.0 w/ 6 speed transmission in good condition,  I’d jump on that real quick.

I would go Ford naturally aspirated V8 no turbo

Wouldn't an SUV be better for hauling a family?

I would get the Ram.

Shocker, I know. But they have super nice interiors, the best styling, and I haven't had to sue them like Ford and feel their quality is at least on par with GM. Judging by Ram sales, it looks like a lot of people feel the same.

@mod_man does make his own point. I would get a base model so I don't have to deal with electronics. Overall, Ford is better in terms of second-gen coyote engines. You have to consider the years as @daywalker posted. Otherwise, you would be in a messed-up situation like mod_man.
