I got my 2005 Camry 2.4l LE's front wheel bearing changed on the (front) passenger side(It is a press bearing). The mechanic gave me a 1-year warranty. It went out again in 7 months.
I paid (7 months ago) them to put a Moog one in because they claimed the Autozone part was not gonna be good. I accepted and paid for extra and I supplied the hub from AutoZone asking them if they accepted that. Because the hub according to them was not that important and they said bearing is the important one.
This morning I took it back to the mechanic and they confirmed the bearing and they said they might have to charge me again if the sound is coming from the hub. If it's bearing they won't charge me. They wanted to check if the sound is coming from the bearing or the hub. I said ok, but thinking after hub cannot make a sound like that and it is not a bearing part that is in constant motion.
I don't want to be tricked by a mechanic.
My questions are:
Can the sound come from the hub?
Does it seem like a mechanic trick to ask for more money for their improper installation or quality of the part that I paid greatly extra compared to the Autozone price? If someone with experience can answer I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you all.
Well they're full of s*** hubs Don't Make any noise the bearing is pressed on the hub and the bearings the only thing I can make the noise they just did a sloppy job putting it in that's a good company they just did bad work
Thank you, Scotty.
Update on the wheel bearings:
They took out the hub and said it has scratches saying scratches caused it because I fell into potholes and that wore the bearing over time. I explained it could be because they didn't torque the cv axle nut and a little bit of play wore it in 6 months.
I talked them to do it but somehow they force charged me $70 for labor and parts had a year warranty on them.
While they are doing it I asked them to torque it this time. They didn't. Guy put the wrench over it and didn't even turn. They taught I had no idea what they were doing. They love their air impact tools. So, I went to home depot and bought a torque wrench to tighten it to specs from the workshop manual for my car. It cost me a lot.
I have a belief this might go out again in 6 months because the quality of labor is worse than the roads in Chicago.
No, I did not go to any of these people but most of them are like these. I mean there was a "mechanic" who broke my lug nut bolt putting a tire on. Then said when you get a tire for winter shop will put it on free. I believed. They never did. That was the day I started doing most of the things on my car. But wheel bearing beyond me.
