Could I have got a bad brand new wheel bearing?

2010 Volkswagen GTI; 191,000 miles.

I recently replaced my front wheel bearing hubs because of play and a grinding noise.  However, after replacement the grinding noise was still there.  I have done the usual diagnosis of jacking the car up and performing the wiggle test, but there is no play.  I have also attempted to load the bearings with aggressive turns while driving, with no success.  Is it possible to over torque a hub assembly? Could I have a bad new bearing? or could it be something else?

Thanks

Did you properly preload the bearings to the manufacturers specs?

yes

I went through a similar experience with my front diff recently, had the grinding so I replaced the bearing hubs along with the lockers, no luck. Ended up being a slightly bent axle shaft & bad u-joint.

It's worth checking your cv joints especially at almost 200k.
