Hello,
The car in question is a 2012 Vauxhall Insignial Estate/ Sport Tourer, A20DT (FWD) with Manual Transmission and 53,000 Miles.
Recently the rear left brake dust shield has cracked, because of this it has started to rub on the break disk. The fault was caught early so I do not believe there is any serious damage to the brake components.
I was researching what tools would be required to replace the shield. However, when doing so I came upon some videos, in which people were cutting trough the shield in order to avoid dealing with the wheel hub. Which got me thinking "Are they simply paranoid, don't have access to the propper tools, can't be bothered, or is there really something to it?" ..."What would yeild the best repair?"
I don't really want to cut through a new part. Plus I don't really see a reason why removing the hub would cause damage. I figure it's more than able to withstand the shock of removal; Dirt shouldn't be a problem either, since the hub assembly will be sealed and I can clean the area before replacing it. I could give it a nice soft landing too.
Aside: If you know any reliable websites I could download a service/repair manual from, please let me know.
I'd like to get some clarity, to make the best repair possible!
Your help is greatly appriciated,
- Gregory
can't be bothered
ding ding.
Many people just cut it off and leave it off. Especially on older cars. It's not worth the trouble to replace because it's not a super important function.
You only have 50k, though. You should replace it.
"Many people just cut it off and leave it off. "
That's what I did. Left front disc dust shield rotted and started making noise while flapping around about four years ago. Looked to be too much of a pain to replace so I just ripped the stupid thing off and there have been no problems.
