I have a 1996 Buick Riviera superchaged with the crappy 4T60E-HD that's already giving up at 86k miles despite of good maintenance. Anyway, the transmission guy says that GM used woven clutch torque converter that gives up easily. Meanwhile, if I want to switch to a on/off torque converter with paper clutch, the PCM needs to be flashed. However, I live in a small town, and my car happens to be '96 so HPtuners wouldn't support the computer flash. The mechanic says that woven clutch tcs are gonna burn itself up slowly regardless of the maintenance.
In this case, what should I do? Get a reman tc with woven clutch, or get a on/off tc with paper clutch and send the PCM to some tuner to make it work?
What's the cost difference between the two options? and How long do you plan on keeping the Riviera ? 86,000 miles over 25 yrs is like 3600/yr. letting cars sit for a long time isn't good either.
