I know that Toyota has built a good reputation of longevity and reliability. But Mazda has been making better and more reliable cars lately. Do you think Mazda quality is as good as Toyota quality when it comes to regular gas engine sedan? Particularly, the Camry vs Mazda 6.
Quality wise, Mazda is near Toyota. By quality I mean the (lack of) recalls, bulletins, and quality control issues.
As for reliability, Mazda makes good cars, but not as good as Toyota by any stretch of the imagination.
I would look for good deals on used Camrys. Both the Camry and Mazda 6 are best in the 2017 model year (before the Camry redesign and before the cylinder deactivation integrated in the Mazda).
If we are talking new (as in 2021 MY), I would still gamble on the Toyota Camry versus the Mazda6. The Mazda6 is offered in both the 2.5L NA I4 with cylinder deactivation (can potentially wear out/damage engine over time) or the 2.5L turbo I4 (no cylinder deactivation). But both are direct injection-only engines and you will have to deal with carbon buildup on the back of the intake valves over time. The Camry has neither of these shortcomings (yes, it has direct injection but also still retains port injection which cleanses the back of the intake valves, very clever of Toyota to employ both, and no cylinder deactivation.) Anyhow, it’s been 3 years since the 8-speed AT came out and some of the kinks via software have been worked out. Long term jury is still out on the 8-speed AT, but if it were my money on 2021 MYs I’d still go with the Camry.
Getting better doesn’t necessarily mean as good as a proven Camry.
If it was my money, I’d still stick to buying a Camry (preferably used, in great shape).
Both cars are new. So I would wait for a few years. Mazda 6 has cylinder deactivation just like @daywalker said. The new Toyota Camrys have the new 8 speeds where it doesn't shift like it should. Toyota Camrys hasn't prove the transmission reliable just yet. I would get a used Toyotas, but I like used Hondas cause of comfort and driving experience.
I would go with Toyota or maybe even look at the Honda Accord 2.0.
I personally am loving what Mazda is doing in terms of styling. And also their increase in quality.
I recommend going to drive them and see if you like how each drives, looks, and works.
I personally LOVE the interior of Mazda's. If only Toyota and Honda placed so much thought into their interior as they do with their engines.
With that said, when it comes down to it, it comes down to the risk you are willing to take.
After the drive, if you want tried, time tested, and true, go with the Camry (or the Accord.).
If you are willing to risk a little, go with the Mazda 6.
Definitely the Camry. My dad was also trying to decide between a 2018 Mazda 6 and a 2018 Toyota Camry and I talked him into the Camry. I got a 2019 Camry myself a week later lol. Toyota makes the most reliable cars out of any brand. Mazda has been getting better lately but they still aren’t at the same level as Honda or Toyota.
