2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid 61k miles, California owned and garaged since birth!
Hi Folks,
This car was in a rather minor frontal impact with no airbag deployment. Insurance company totalled for $20k which was a fair price. However, I later searched the web for the VIN and discovered that it was on its way to a buyer in Russia! What a country! The insurance adjuster said that there are over 15 separate sensors in the front end of these cars and each one could send a trouble code which would require extensive hours to diagnose. It was cheaper to simply total the claim. My question is why can't the sophisticated Toyota computer specify the exact diagnosis instead of the usual "well there could be 8 reasons why the P0501 code is showing" for example?
Thanks for your help with all the things that you and the moderators do for us less than rich folks who want a long lasting car.

They're not that sophisticated. They're pretty dumb, because cars need to be affordable to normal people. We can't build them like Mars rovers.

People in Russia do all kinds of crazy stuff with cars, who knows what kind of Frankenstein that thing will wind up being turned into.
