[Solved] Odd Tire Wear

Topic starter

I have a 2005 Toyota Matrix AWD with 216k miles on it.

I mostly use this car for doing deliveries similar to doordash, except I drive longer distance, lots on twisty mountain roads, and I may take some turns a little hard, not overly bad though.

I purchased a set of Falken Ziex 950's before I started doing deliveries, as the tires had really good reviews, and were on sale for $75 a piece about a year ago. Honestly they ride well, and do good on wet pavement.

I rotate the tires every 5k miles, and have about 16k miles on them, and was about to rotate.

I went for my yearly inspection and they noticed that the center of the tire was down to 3/32, the rest being maybe 6/32. I know that over-inflation can lead to this issue, the odd thing is I have had them inflated just as the door sticker says for my car, 35 front, 32 rear. When I rotate the tire front to back, I adjust the pressure. It may be off by 1 pound at most.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Thanks!

Have you done any replacement of suspension parts since you bought the car? If they're original parts, they're likely worn out.

That may be the answer, I did replace the suspension, but I only did it in April. They may have worn oddly until that point.

Did you do it before or after you got tires?

I had the tires a good while before I changed the suspension.

Did you get them realigned? That's probably your problem right there. Doing any suspension work calls for a realignment.

Did you get an alignment done when you purchased your tires?

Yes I did, sorry forgot to mention it.

Interesting question. Even though you have been checking pressure, it still sounds over inflated.  (Speculation: maybe they are overinflated in relation to the light weight of your car, even though they are in spec, or maybe the mountain elevations are allowing expansion, or just the gauge is underreading).

Yeah I am baffled. I use a tpms monitor that seems to be accurate, and I also check it with a handheld gauge. When they did the inspection, what he read was exactly what my tpms was reading. I have never had a set of tires do this, or have any unusual wear for that matter.

Scotty has figured out what it could be

@g-t Thank you!

I would first try measuring tire pressure with a different tire gauge.  Who knows, maybe yours is defective?
