Oil burning/consumption questions

Hi Scotty,

Got a 2012 Hyundai Sonata 6MT with 131K miles and the infamous 2.4 engine. It burns a quart every 400-500 miles. I need to add some more oil to it but only have 5w-30 and not 5w-20. 5w-20 is recommended but 5w-30 is also listed as acceptable in the owner’s manual. Would it be okay to give it a quart of 5w-30 if the rest of the oil pan is holding 4 quarts of 5w-20?

Also, would high mileage oil help slow the oil burn? Only reason I ask is I suspect the car is burning a lot of oil because the piston rings are worn/leaky and need some rejuvenation which is what high mileage oil advertises…but is it a scam?

TIA!

All that's really different in high-mileage oil is that it contains seal conditioners. Some brands have a little more ZDDP as well. However those oils would have no effect on oil burning. The only rejuvenation for worn rings is to rebuild the engine.

Thanks Chuck!

@uptonogoode - about the only thing that's reasonable to try would be to change the PCV valve and see if that slows the oil burning a bit. I would not expect a whole lot though, Hyundai engines are known for premature failure and high oil consumption.

You can mix oil. It doesn't really matter. But nothing will stop that from burning oil. Just physically worn out. They're terrible engines

Thank you Scotty!
