I recently purchased a 2020 Mazda CX5, no turbo. Would it be a good idea or a waste of time and money to have an oil catch can installed? Has today's technology solved the GDI carbon build up problem?
i would not wast money on it
I thought I had heard that Mazda designed their GDI engines to purposely keep in the intake area hotter to prevent the carbon build up by not having cooling/water passages around that area? You may want to research that. Anyone know for certain?
I know in my Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8L V6 that we bought new, I installed a catch can. I was surprised how much that can catches in a month. We also have the dealer do the induction cleaning every 15,000 miles. But we do all that because we like to keep cars to as close to 300,000 miles as possible. If you don't keep them that long, don't bother. I know my dad's 2009 MINI Clubman S had to have the engine opened up and blasted clean in 2016 because of the intake carbon buildup that set off a CEL.
