I have a 2020 lexus rx 450h - i am due for an oil change. the Lexus dealership is running a special and is less expensive than my mechanic for the service. Can we trust a dealership to perform a simple oil change and tire rotation or stick to my mechanic?
They will assign their least experienced, junior personnel to the job. Also the real reason dealers run those kind of specials is to get you in the door so the service writer can give you a laundry list of expensive "recommendations".
the Lexus dealership is running a special and is less expensive than my mechanic for the service. These type of dealer specials are often baits (as mentioned by @chucktobias) to get you in the door so they can sell you other parts and services. It's typically bulk oil with an OEM filter. If you don't mind the service writer coming back and trying to up-sell you, I say "go for it".
The personnel doing these oil changes aren't top notch but oil changes don't require much mechanical aptitude either. My local Toyota dealer occasionally runs a similar service special and it so happens the bulk oil they have is 0W-20 Mobile1 full synthetic. I always check behind any work done on my car and I've had no issue.
FWIW - I don't like dealerships, at all.
@hixster thanks - it is just over a year since last oil change, but mileage is low. the car is almost 5 years old and not even 20k miles. I am not too worried about the upsell.
@gmanesq The service writers at my dealership will inform customers they have to buy quart bottles in order to get 0W-20 Mobile1. This isn't true and of course it bumps the price up significantly so the good deal is gone. I no longer do my own changes so paying $60 for an OEM filter and full synthetic oil change is fair deal. Like you, mileage isn't an issue for me and yearly changes are all I need.
