Oil Change After Engine Replacement

Few weeks ago I had engine replaced on 2016 Sonata under CPO warranty (60K miles).  Apparently I have 10Year/100K CPO warranty and I'm now glad that I bought used CPO Hyundai (to clarify, I'm not glad that I bought Hyundai).  Still have 4 years / 40K miles left on the warranty and am thinking to keep it for another 3 years and then to get rid of it.

Question I have, after the engine replacement, the dealer suggested that I replace oil within first 3K miles.  What do you guys recommend, should I wait 3k or should I do it sooner, like after 1K to flush any particles if there are any?  The other thing I might actually have dealer replace oil the first time so they don't blame me if something else happens to the engine (with this CPO warranty and all)..

Changing earlier won't hurt so it's not a bad idea. Scotty recommends changing oil & filter every 5k miles.

Nice warranty!

Well, it's not really how often to change. I never go over 5K miles between oil changes. It's how soon to make the first oil change after engine replacement. If it makes any difference at all. If not, I'll just have a dealer change @ 3k the first time as they recommended. After that I'll be doing my own oil changes as I always did every 5K miles.

I understood your question. Changing it earlier than 5k will have a marginal effect at best.

That's pretty common.

The 2.4 GDi engine in these is garbage (and the 2.0T ain't great either)

What was the way it failed? engine knock? has it seized?

That's great, usually Hyundai requires you to have a warranty transfer procedure and that only gives you 7 years / 60k miles.

Still have 4 years / 40K miles left on the warranty and am thinking to keep it for another 3 years and then to get rid of it.

Yep.

Other than the questionable US market engine, the rest is not too bad.

I think it's reasonable.

Fresh oil is never a bad idea, it doesn't hurt anything.

You can replace it now, and then at 3k - the oil and filter don't cost too much at all.

The other thing I might actually have dealer replace oil the first time

Get a quote first.

Dealers are usually pretty terrible and probably will try to upsell you on everything.

I would not recommend it.
