[Solved] Oil change method- suction machine vs. drain plug

2017 Subaru Outback 2.5 - 48,000 miles

Had new tires put on at a discount store and decided to ask them to change the oil too while it was in.

It was ~$10 more than the oil and filter I had previously purchased, so I decided to let them do it and save what I bought for next time.

When I checked my oil later it was ~ 1/8’’ above the full line, and after looking into it found out they use a suction machine rather than draining from the plug.

I assume they didn’t get it all out because the oil still has a slightly dirty color.

Should I be concerned? Yes I will do myself in future either way- had a moment of busy/lazy weakness. Thanks

More like 1/4"-1/2 " over full mark actually

Lesson learned.

Agreed…would you recommend taking out a 1/2 quart or so?

Take out enough so that the level is just below the full mark.

Not ideal, but not that big a deal if you change frequently (and change the filter). But definitely change via the plug sometimes - over time without being loosened, the drain plug will get corroded and it’ll be a bear to get out.

Based on video's I've seen on YouTube showing comparisons between drain and pump methods, pump methods leave about 1/8th-1/4th of a cup of the old oil in. With new fluids and a one time thing it won't hurt the car. This done over the life of the car may not be desirable.
