Oil pan plug not tightened at dealership

My wife and I bought a 2013 Lexus RX350 on 1/2/21 with 67,162 miles on it. When we brought it home, I noticed right away that there were oil drippings on my driveway. I got a paper towel to wipe the oil pan and look at and to my surprise, I was able to turn the oil pan bolt with my fingers! I got a wrench and tightened it up and had my wife call the car salesman. I told the salesman what I discovered and what I did. He then told us to bring the car back so they could look at it and top off the oil. My wife took it back to the dealership to get it looked at. The carfax states that the dealership who sold it to us changed the oil on 12/17/20, so it looks like the oil plug was loose for 16 days prior to us buying it.

We bought the car at a BMW dealership, the BMW and the Lexus dealership from which the car was purchased from brand new are owned by the same corporation.

We are concerned about any possible damage that might have occurred with the car leaking oil. Being that the car was used and we paid for it in cash, is there something we can do or ask for to protect our investment? I am at a lost of what to do. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Did you check the oil as long as it had at least three or four quarts left it would be perfectly fine and if car was not making rattling noises I'm sure it didn't do any damage

No I didn't check the oil level when I discovered the leak. I didn't hear any rattling noises either. I appreciate your time! The Great Scotty Kilmer replied to me. Yay!

It appears that you caught it early enough, especially if no oil lights or mechanical noises were present. At a minimum, the dealer should provide you with an apology and a free service for the inconvenience and stress of the situation.

Honda dealer did that to me once on a "free oil change" coupon.

Drove it until the next oil change, and barely lost any oil.

I’ve had a couple bad oil change experiences, like you’ve experienced, and I started changing my own oil about 7 years ago because of it. Here’s a tip on cleaning up the oil, if you have not already. Get some engine degreaser from auto parts store. It comes in an aerosol can. Spray the oil spot and wipe up with rag. It works pretty well.
