Oil smells like fuel.

Mr Kilmer, I own a 17 Forester XT, 24k miles, almost daily driver. this issue has been going on since day one of ownership so I dont think the mods and protune have anything to do with the odor. The dipstick never see any movement of oil, always on the full mark, no more no less. What can be doing this, no one wants to even discuss this issue. I look to you for some type of answer as to why or a fix.

Hey It's a Subaru.

If it doesn't burn oil and it runs I would stop sniffing the dipstick...

Sounds like it runs fine.

@jjjjace
Well it does run fine, runs like a raped ape but oil in the fuel is NOT good, washes the cylinder walls, im sure you know that. Reduces engine life, im sure you know that as well.

Hahaha what would you recommend he sniff, then?

Based on your description, I'm thinking of oil dilution issue.

@yaser
Yes sir, it is an oil dilution issue, no two ways about it. The question, how do I minimize it or cure it.

Earth dream Honda engines have the same issue and Honda suggested to use a specific oil. Maybe you try that if the oil viscosity fits your vehicle.

Let's verify and give you some piece of mind, send an oil sample in for analysis, I think I paid $20 for the last one but don't recall.  If I was confident it was fuel dilution, the first thing I'd replace would be the fuel pressure reg.

@hillbilly
TY Hillbilly, I have thought about the analysis but with the amount of fuel odor I honestly didnt think I would need one but I am going to request a kit.. As far as the reg valve, I believe the car would have to be retuned again, I could be wrong about that if its the same part number and pressure rating and not only is that expensive but I really dont want to out the stress on the engine again.

I understand, but if it's as bad as you think... the outcome is worse by not fixing it. Hence, how bad is it (numbers)? And if your lucky, your wrong and all is ok ; )

@hillbilly
Just ordered a analysys kit from blackstone, kits are free, analysys cost $30.. Im also going to order a reg valve but not swap them out yet, ty for your time sir.

Do you often do short trips & turn off the engine before it has reached optimum operating temperature?

@inthrustwetrust
TY for replying.. I do some short trips but, now dont laugh, I go out of my way to bring oil temp up, usually about 190 to 200 degrees but yes I do some short trips. Does not seem to make any difference.

His Mom's home cooking during the upcoming holidays...

Turkey and Apple pie.....

Save your nose for what's important.

@jjjjace
My mom passed away last Jan, almost a year now, 98 years old, I still want to know whats with the fuel odor in the oil.. Any knowledge on the subject? Would certainly welcome any and all answers or suggestions.

Sorry about your mom and I am sure she loved you and she is surely missed by all in your family.

When it comes to the Subaru it will really depend on how much fuel is actually getting into the oil.

Some fuel smell is normal.

From here it would be very difficult to judge the odor although it would be showing signs of engine trouble if this was a big problem.

@jjjjace
No engine issues at all except for the gas odor. Im going to have a fuel analysis done by blackstone.. we see what they say. And I ordered a fuel regulator valve, wont install it until after the analysis, if bad results, im just going to throw it on and see what happens.
