old 4runner starting issue

Topic starter

1990 4runner, V6, manual, starts and runs perfectly 95 % of the time. But occasionally when fully warmed it refuses to start. I push clutch pedal to floor, turn key, dash lights and radio come on, but nothing happens up front. Repeating the process give same result. I resort to jumper cables and a helpful stranger. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts and jiggling the jumper contacts. When it starts it act like nothing was ever wrong. New battery didn't help. My  mechanic thinks it the starter. What do you think?

When it won't start try hitting the starter with a piece of wood and see if it works - if it comes alive with mechanical shock the starter is shot. Also check condition of the cables and battery terminals, and the ground strap between chassis and engine.

Thanks, I'll try it.
