Opinions on Mazda engines

I’ve heard some bad things about some certain Mazda engines and I wanted to know which years/specific engines I should avoid when looking at Mazda cars.

Currently looking at a 2010 Mazda 6, manual transmission, 4cyl engine, 70k miles for $2800.

Thanks

That's a steal if it doesn't have rust or any other problems. Did you get it?

During that time there were Ford engines as well as Mazda's own Skyactiv engines.

The engines were alright except for some of the Ford V6 engines other than that the Ford designed transmissions were weak but the one your looking at is a manual.

They can be decent cars just don't pay much and have a mechanic check it out.

2800 is a pretty good deal I'd have a mechanic check it out and would consider buying it especially if its a 4 cylinder.

It's not a big seller, but I have yet to hear anything bad about the cars.
If everything is good, that sounds like a good deal.
Coworker had an earlier model and went over 200k miles with no issues.

It really depends which one it is, some of those Mazda engines were actually made by ford and some other ones were made by Mazda.

2010 is part of the transition period from when Mazda was gaining its independence from Ford. In the late 90’s and early to mid 2000’s Mazda and Ford shared a ton of platforms for their vehicles.

The 2010 is part of the second generation Mazda 6. Mazda had an influence on Ford products, and Ford had a shrinking influence on Mazda.

Just from anecdotal evidence, the second generation 6 has been reliable. I’d make sure the engine was a Mazda engine, instead of a Ford. Odds are it is a Mazda engine.

The third generation starting in 2012, Mazda 6 is purely Mazda.

Anyhow, in your specific situation. Assuming everything checks out, $2800 for 70k 10 year old car seems like a decent deal. It would be hard to find an Accord or Camry at that price with the same age and mileage.

The 4 cylinder is a Mazda MZR design the 6 cylinder is a Ford Duractec.

It really depends on what engine. Mazda has both very good and not so good engines.

personally I own a car with an engine jointly built by ford and Mazda (Mazda L-series / Ford DuraTec) and they’re great engines that last for a very long time.

on the other hand, I’ve herd very negative things about newer Mazda engines.
