Overflowing coolant after driving

Topic starter

My daughter has a 2014 Ford Focus SE automatic. When she drives it, it doesn’t overheat or anything but as soon as she parks it and turns it off, the coolant start going up in the coolant reservoir until it overflows from the overflow valve in the reservoir. It has a closed system which means no radiator cap, just the coolant reservoir. It doesn’t leak from anywhere when cold or running.

I changed the coolant reservoir, thermostat but didn’t change the water pump yet. I thought may be there is air trapped in the engine block. So I also vacuum filled it but no success.

I searched all kind of threads on the internet but didn’t find anything like this.

Please help.

Thank you

Sami

Are your cooling fans working?

@oneimich
Yes the fans work

Check the color of the coolent if it has a tint of clay or brown color it might be the start of a head gasket failure.You eliminated air in the system,thermostat  and water pump does not turn when engine is stopped. As a test try shutting car off and spray raditor with a hose for a few min to see if it still does it.   Good luck

@tourist
The coolant is clean and also did a couple of oil changes and the oil was clean. The exhaust is also clean with no color or Odor to indicate that the oil or coolant is leaking.

When did you change the coolant?

@yaser
I did it twice. About 3 months ago and then emptied it and vacuum filled it today.

And all the times, it overflows. correct?

@yaser
Yes.. I have to add coolant every morning because it overflows when she parks it at night time after driving it to school and back.

@yaser
Could be a massive air pocket

Either the system can not keep the pressure or you have blown head gasket. Try the Amazon kit and if the head gasket is fine, check the radiators and pressure test it.

@oneimich
This car doesn’t have a radiator cap.

You put it in the part you replaced.....

@oneimich
The cap on the overflow is the radiator cap. It should have a psi rated cap.

@oneimich
Ok I will try that.

Well you have exhaust gases coming from somewhere, I would get it in to someone so they can start by pressure testing the system along with exhaust gases.

@oneimich
Thank you all for your responses. I will try the test and see what it will indicate. Thank you again.

Did you change the cap on the reservoir?

As well, a blown head gasket can pump air into the coolant.

@carlos
I changed the whole reservoir with one that I bought from Ford
