P0463 Code - Check Engine Light On

My wife has a 2005 Dodge Durango SLT with a 4.7L V-8. The check engine light is on and I’m getting the P0463 code. Will replacing the fuel pump assembly correct this issue? If not, what would you recommend? Thank you

P0463-FUEL LEVEL SENSOR 1 CIRCUIT HIGH

When Monitored:
Ignition on and battery voltage above 10.4 volts.

P0463 Set Condition:
The fuel level sensor signal voltage at the PCM goes above 4.9 volts for more than 90 seconds. One Trip
Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

Possible Causes:

(N4) FUEL LEVEL SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO BATTERY VOLTAGE

(N4) FUEL LEVEL SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN

(N5) FUEL LEVEL SENSOR RETURN CIRCUIT OPEN

FUEL LEVEL SENSOR

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

Your fuel pump circuit looks like this and the (N4) and (N5) parts of the circuit referenced in the Possible Causes are highlighted in yellow.

If you want to read the diagnostic procedure for determining if this is indeed a bad fuel level sensor or if it's a wiring issue the procedure starts 1/2 way down the page of this link and continues on the next page.

Buying a good fuel pump is a hit to the wallet, plus paying somebody to do the work can get pretty expensive.

In this case if you can find a guy with a scanner that can read the fuel level sensor voltage all he has to do is to disconnect the connector at the fuel pump, use a little piece of wire to jump the center terminals together, if the voltage goes from above 4.8 volts down to below 0.4 volts it would confirm the sensor is bad and it isn't a wiring/instrument cluster issue.

Thank you so much!

I am afraid that the fuel sending unit (and probably the fuel pump) need replacing if they are one unit.  High voltage to the sending unit indicates its is on the way out.
