  1. Hi, just got a check engine code P0705 for my 2008 Toyota Sienna.
The mechanic stated the following for repair since they couldn’t do it:
  2. ” The van needs a valve body and must be reprogrammed after the install of it, recommend bringing to the dealer “ since apparently they cannot reprogram a Toyota one.
  3.  Are they even diagnosing this code right? Nothing points to a valve body issue after doing a search. Everything I’ve seen says it’s the neutral safety switch, which this mechanic replaced last week.
Originally the car was there because there was a short in a wire for an O2 sensor, so they replaced it with a used harness and that code went away, but then they found this code P0705 come up and stated to replace the NSS. Then it was fine no codes, then three days later the code came on. Today they diagnosed it saying the NSS needed to be adjusted, then said the code came back and that I needed a new valve body.
    Any input appreciated thank you!

Baloney!  It could be as simple as a maladjusted shift lever or a short in the wiring.  Sounds like a money scam to me.  You could also just need a fluid and filter change.

Thanks! I feel like nothing was wrong until they were fixing the first problem. The shifter doesn’t get stuck, the lights on the dash selector move with the shifter. If the code comes back I was thinking of installing the old NSS since I asked them to save it for me. Supposedly they had installed a Toyota brand new one in the beginning of this mess but I haven’t verified that yet by going under the car.
