Dear Scotty,

So i recently bought a 2011 toyota camry xle with 140,000 miles on it for 3600 dollars. theres just one problem... ITS GRAY!!! who sees a gray car and thinks, "thats a great color, i want that." 😂

Anyway, i'm hoping to buy some marble spray paint and some clear coat, and paint it marble colored instead. ive done alot of work spraying in paint booths, and should be able to make it look professional. my question is, how much is this going to lower the value of the car? or will it even lower it at all? i dont want to paint my car a better color if its going to cut the value in half, and i DEFINITELY am not going to pay someone thousands of dollars to paint a car that i only paid 3600 dollars for.

why do you care about value? If you're going to that much trouble to personalize it, then just drive it into the ground.

Resale value is based on the buyer, and most buyers want OEM.  For a classic car or something, sure, a custom paint job can add value.  But for a 2011 Camry, the highest value will be in a well maintained factory paint job.

That said, I’m with @imperator: it’s your car, and you just bought it.  It’s transportation, not an investment. Make it how you want it.
