I did look, honest I did.
I have faded, UV damaged plastic parts on my Expedition. After looking on YouTube I saw a few things to do. One is to use a hot air heat gun. Another is to paint with spray bed liner. There might have been others but I can't remember them now.
Has anyone painted exposed black plastic trim to protect from UV exposure? What was used and how long has it lasted?
I would be afraid of heat warping it.
the faded stuff should only be on the surface. Maybe you could sand through it. What kind of trim is it?
Many cars have black plastic parts for trim work. Like the black plastic trim between the hood and windshield. Or some black, unpainted rear view mirror housings. Or black trim around wheel wells.
Many pieces can be brought back to black with "Back To Black" polish but I don't want to polish any more. I want the black trim painted so it will be cleaned when I wash the car. A little work now to prevent more work later.
The heat gun is not used enough to damage the part, just to clean the top of the plastic. The problem with that is it still needs polishes to keep it looking good.
I'm sure there's products out there. But IMO paint peels, and plastic will fade again. I don't stress too much about cosmetic stuff like that. Not trying to win a car show 😆
I'm old, fat, bald and retired. I live in Florida and have nothing more to do than to wash and clean my cars. I want them to look gooder with the least amount of effort because with all my other defects I am also lazy.
Why should I have to accept a less that clean looking car when a simple layer of pain can protect the plastic from the damages of UV rays and the potential destruction of exposed parts?
I don't want to win the car show but I don't want to look like I came to town down the dirt road instead of the paved highway.
go see the world and meet new people. Drive your car. Don't spend your golden years shining it up. 🙂
you can't take it with you, ya know?
i have seen enough of the world to last and not much time left to do much but polish what I have.
Not trying to take it with me but to enjoy it while I'm still here. We do not have to live in dirt. Even Scotty will wear gloves on his hands to hide from dirt.
fair enough. Best of luck and let us know if you find anything good.
I will probably go with the Bed Liner spray. The parts I want to protect are the two runningboards, one scuff plate at the rear hatch. I might even try that on the rearview mirrors and windshield cowling. Not sure about doing it all but some for sure.
