I have a 1998 Ford Ranger that has issues with the idle. When slowing to a stop the high idle kicks in (1500-2000) and then when stopped all of a sudden goes to normal (500-700). I am unable to find for certain if the PCM controls the idle of if another electronic part controls it.

Try cleaning the throttle assembly and if that doesn't work often you have to replace it they just flat wear out as they age on Fords
