petroleum vs. detergent injector cleaner

I was going to buy a detergent based injector cleaner to see if it would help or maintain my old xterra. I've heard you talk about some of them. When I went to my parts store, I was going to buy a detergent based product but they owner told me he would live and die based on petroleum based products in the metal cans like lucas and seafoam.  I've heard you say not to use petroleum based products for this purpose. Can you explain the difference and your advice.

NEVER use Seafoam in your car.

Seafoam was designed for two-stroke outboard motors. Not suitable for modern vehicles.

Ya, I didnt use it in the gas. I did put it in my oil to try and get rid of a sticking/plugged lifter. It seemed to help a bit with that. But the best thing I have done with that is change my oil every 2K and use royale purple 1/2 quart every time. It's mostly gone.
