  • Hi , I have a 1979 FORE PINTO CRUISING WAGON V6 2.8L
  • Just purchased back in September of 22
  • has 126,000 miles , car has been sitting before I purchased, I’ve done the basic tune up minus the transmission fluid change , my question is , is it worth rebuilding the transmission since it’s starting to slip? Car has a super solid body minor cosmetic rust , i palm to run it as a daily .

Even if you rebuild the transmission, I am not sure a 44-year old vehicle you just bought is suitable for a daily driver.  I hope you have another ride.

That's a relatively simple C3 3-speed automatic transmission and should be pretty straightforward to rebuild, unlike today's overly complex monstrosities. The problem would be finding a shop familiar with those old things. (An ambitious shade-tree mechanic could probably overhaul it at home. Rebuild kits are readily available.)

Have you tried adjusting the intermediate band? I forget whether that trans has a kickdown cable or vacuum modulator (it should have one or the other) but those would need to be checked as well.

Thank you for your reply, I haven’t tried much to be honest just the basics , high end for the job was $2500 low end was at $1600 , I’m gonna rebuild it and put in a new carburetor, hopefully it turns out good , 44 yr old car as a Daily will definitely have a lot of people unable to believe it 🤫

May not be a bad idea to get AAA

And remeber, good and full rebuild consists of checking a lot of things,  and sometimes dissasembling and assembling few times, so it costs money ...... If you find a cheap guy he will propably look inside see that few parts are burned and replace em and it MIGHT be enough. So thats where you gamble .......
