Plate Renewal

Hi Scotty, I am in Wisconsin and have a 2018 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid with just under 15,000 miles. When it was time to renew my plates, I was a little surprised,  normally it is about $90.00 , but when I got my notice it would cost me $160.00 for the year to renew them, Where is the insensitive for buying a Hybrid or a tax break? Just because I am giving a little less money to the oil companies and my local government, that's no reason to punish me.

Thanks,

It's to make up the lower amount of fuel taxes that hybrid owners are paying for their use of the roads and the maintenance thereof. You are not being "punished". You are being assessed your "fair share" of paying for maintaining the infrastructure that roadgoing vehicles depend on.

The real question that needs to be asked is is: Why should hybrid and electric car owners be shown special favoritism and subsidized by the rest of us? It's good to see that the state of Wisconsin is addressing this fundamental issue of fairness. Others will ultimately follow.

Pfft. I don't want to pay for your car. You use the same roads that I do.

You got a massive discount from the government when you bought the car. That's more than enough.

And people wonder why our infrastructure is so bad here. Everyone wants to use the roads, nobody wants to pay for them.

I bought the car used, no discount here, I don't mind paying for road repairs, but most of the time they only do half a job.

Probably because they can only afford to do half. Bottom line, nobody is punishing you for having a Hybrid.
