Hi Scotty,
I have a 2007 Prius with 127000 miles and live in Mn. Car runs good but has a rough idle once in a while, then usually clears up in few minutes. Now during winter, i am getting 17 mpg less than summer. 48 down to 31. This happened last winter too. Never had a code in 2.5 years. New battery pack installed by Toyota almost 3 years ago Help!!
Hi I have a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu LS with the 2.5 Liter 4-cylinder engine and automatic transmission. When i bought the car used in 2015 with 14K kms, I was averaging 12L/100km. From there on, the gas consumption has gotten worse, now i'm averaging 18L/100km and i have 60K kms. There has never been an error code come on, the light does work, and i constantly check with a scanner if any error codes are stored and never find any. The engine runs fine and idles fines, I change the oil religiously and air filter is always kept clean and replaced every 2 years. The car doesn't burn any oil or have and fluid leaks.
It could be a lot of things. Winter blend fuel, tire pressure, dirty MAF sensor. I'd change my air filter at least once a year, not two. When did you change your trans fluid and filter last?
@dan - I respectfully disagree. Since engine friction is reduced by the clean oil and hence more efficiency is achieved, frequent and regular oil changes can increase mpg. The amount may be very small but it definitely is there, IMHO. But I still think the winter gas blend is causing the approximately 2% reduction in mpg.
You will never notice a difference in efficiency from a single oil change.
However, over a very long time, dirty oil could cause enough wear on an engine to make it less efficient.
Hi Scotty & Everyone. I recently bought this 2016 Scion TC. It's fine except I only get 23 mpg's average. It should be 23/31, I do mostly highway driving, using "ECO" mode and cruise control. Automatic/ 38,000 miles.
Suggestions please.
Thank You
Can anyone n I mean anyone please explain to me why my car 17 Lincoln MKZ awd 2.0 ecoboost suddenly has went from 450 to 470 miles per fill up to only 350 miles on a fill up. Mind you I have kept up on maintenance religiously car gas 133k plug have been done oil changed every 4K full synthetic, all the fluids are changed trans ptu rear diff coolant recently went back to synthetic blend motor craft but that was after this loss of mileage issue occurred. The only thing I can think that has changed is it’s starting to get cold in Colorado but that means I lose nearly 100 miles a tank!? Please someone help
Poor Gas Mileage (Honda Civic)
Hey everyone! I'm a new hobbyist and noticed my car is running pretty bad city mileage these days... i'm getting 10L per 100KM when I sh ould technically be getting 7.5L per 100km of city driving..
what could be the problem? I just changed out both Air/Fuel Ratio sensor and O2 sensor...
no change..
No vacuum leaks that I know of anyway....
is this the fault of a dirty catalytic converter? perhaps the spark plugs need to be rechecked for proper gap?
should I do a positive pressure test (I saw chrisfix do this to find a leak in his exhaust manifold).... brand new air filter.. and also cleaned out the mass air flow sensor with CRC airflow sensor cleaner...
I'm seriously stumped here....
about a month ago I bought a used 2018 Honda Civic from Enterprise. Since then the mileage has gradually dropped from 40 mpg to 36 mpg (recently the weather has been very cold and mpg has been falling faster). Is this normal?
I have a 2015 Toyota Camry SE I4 with 116000 miles on it. For a while, I was average about 32mpg. But now, Im only getting 25mpg. I bought the vehicle in September and gas mileage was in the 30s at the time. Ive seen the decrease over the course of the last month. Could it be a spark plug or MAF sensor issue? The air filter is clean and i just changed the oil. Not sure what the issue is
Hey all,
I have a 2010 Nissan Altima 2.5 S with 165,000 kms. I have a clogged catalytic converter as the engine rumbles at 1,800 kms. This has been diagnosed. In the summer, I get 10L/100kms (this is accurate as I correlate the amount of litres I fuel up with the kms driven) with mixed driving and light acceleration as I don't surpass 2,000 RPMS. However, in the winter, with the same driving dynamics, I get 13L/100kms. I was wondering if the catalytic converter could be the reason this is happening? Or something else?
Thank you
Help with poor fuel economy on 2010 Toyota Venza
Hi
I have a 2010 Toyota Venza 4 cylinder awd with 103,000 miles. Im getting 14 mpg with a mix of city and highway.
I changed the engine air filter, cleaned the MAF sensor, changed the spark plugs and got an EFI service where they pressure cleaned the injectors. I also got the transmission checked out by a reliable specialist. He said the transmission is fine. Please help
Im thinking about getting rid of it

Your poor economy may be the result of gasoline manufacturers changing over to the winter formulation for fuels.
Hey Scotty, I have a 2017 Toyota Highlander LTE..i bought it brand new and it has 49,800 miles on it...as of 5 months ago I've noticed that the my car on a full tank used to be about 330 miles before going empty, but slowly and surely my mileage has gotten lower and lower on a full tank where now it sits at 270 on a full tank...and I cant seem to figure out why its doing that and there have been no check engine light or any other indicators lighting up on the dashboard..i wanted to see if you knew why this problem would be occurring..thank you for your time
I not familiar with cars...but will a engine flush help my issue?
No, it's just a way for a shop to rip you off. What kind of "flush" are they trying to sell you; coolant, engine oil, transmission, brake fluid??
They were never specific on what they were gnna "flush"...all was told to me was an "engine flush" was needed...but I refused the service till I sought for more knowledge on the situation
My 2014 Honda Accord MPG dropped significantly. It has 100K mileage.
It's only getting 21 MPG even though I'm using mainly on highways. I don't think it is a normal range considering winter factors (cold temperatures). I can only drive 300 miles before I get the gas light on the dashboard.
Sometimes, it makes random loud thunk noise at cold start and usually short squeaking noise. (Usually after the car is parked more than 1-2 hours or overnight). While driving, it doesn't make any noticable noises.
Not sure what the problem is, I went to two local shops but they said they can't hear noise and they can't find any problems. Also tried BlueDriver but it doesn't show any codes...
My mother bought a 2010 Ford Focus back when it was new in 2010. She has always driven slowly, and doesnt drive like a maniac. She used to get 30 MPG in the city and 40 on the highway. Now when I look in the computer, she averages 18 MPG and still drives just as slow. We changed the engine Air Filter, and Sparkplugs and the engine is still wasting too much gas. The engine doesn't burn any oil and has no signs that it is in bad health. The car has 110,000 miles on it and has always had its routine maitenence. How can we resolve this terrible gas mielage?
Volkswagen Polo, 07/2003, 1.4 16V, 55 kw (73hp), 169 568 km.
Car gets horrible fuel economy on the highway.
When driving at 130 km/h (80 mph); car sits at 4,100 rpm.
It gets about 11 l/100 km (21 mpg). I think this is too high.
The fuel filter was changed last year. Could it be the fuel pump or injectors needing replacement? The car has no problems accelerating or picking up speed.
Do you know how this could be sorted out? I will be using this car for two months to commute to work (it is my sister's).
2008 Scion xB, 2.4 liter, 141,000 miles - does not get driven a ton, it's a drive around town to run errands car, work-from-home car mostly. No major issues, just needs new shocks in the back. I do regular oil changes, I did new spark plugs properly gapped last winter and a new battery this summer. I changed out the air filter and cabin air filter last winter too, they are not dirty or clogged. I also drive on the correct tire pressure.
Over the last 10 months or so MPG has been going down, when it used to get 27mpg on average, it's now getting 20-21, and with gas the price it is, that stinks! It never used to get such low mileage, especially for a basic little car like a Scion xB. I don't drive too crazy either, I'm not a lead foot.
I watched the video where you put Royal Purple Fuel system cleaner in the tank of a Corolla. It sounds like a good first shot to help this MPG issue, is it truly effective and helpful? I'm not expecting MAGIC, but if it can help and clean those injectors/dirty fuel parts, then thats good right?
I've read about the possible culprits being an Oxygen Sensor and Fuel Pump as well - how big and annoying a job are those to tackle or at least examine?
I'm saving up for a bigger, better vehicle and plan to sell this one in the next 1-2 years, I just need it to run better and get more mpg's in the meantime. What do you suggest I try or do first to help this issue???
And surprisingly, this scion doesn't burn oil that bad, it burns it a bit like all of them did this model year, but it's not insane, and I don't drive so much for it to be worse.
Thank you so much, you're the best ever!!!
^^^ Thank you so much for replying! I will grab a can of the Royal Purple fuel max cleaner and see how it works, then keep an eye on that MAF sensor.
You're the best, thank you!!!
Scotty,
I've always been OCD about maintenance on my vehicles. Currently, I own a 2019 Ford Ranger, Lariat 4x4 with the 2.3 Ecoboost engine. I've always changed the oil every 5K with GF6 oil and routinely change my filters. The truck as performed flawlessly for 43,000 miles. In keeping with my desire to keep my truck in top condition, I decided to run Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner/conditioner through the system by adding it to the gas tank. Ever since, my mileage has dropped from 27.5mpg average to 23.9mpg. I hand calculate every fill up to ensure accuracy. The truck runs perfectly and still maintains an abundance of power. I drive it easily on the same route daily (partial interstate, city, highway, back roads). I've tried different brands of gasoline, and even filled up with alcohol-free 90 octane (pure gas) and have netted even worse mileage on this current tank. Filters are new and tire pressures are perfect. I'm perplexed!

Scotty, I have a 2006 Ford Escape Limited AWD. It has the V6, 4 speed automatic. Its loaded and has 63,000 original miles on it. I am the original owner. Using the cruise on the highway or just driving around town, I get about 14mpg. The car has the engine where you have to take the intake manifold off to check the plugs or injectors. Not something I can afford to do right now. Is the mpg about right for this car? Seems like when I bought it, it was getting around 17. It runs good but the mileage sucks.

As it ages and if you haven't changed the oil as often as you should or whatever, maybe that's what causes the engine to get poor gas mileage at that point. But hey, you're vehicle is very dependable and it could last you a long time as long as you maintain it as often as you should.
- oil change frequency will not affect fuel efficiency, same with oil additives - it lubes the internals of the engine, and no modern engine has enough internal friction to decrease fuel efficiency in a noticeable way.
- Cars do not age like humans, the question OP is asking is what sensor / mechanical part has gotten worn out in a manner that allegedly might be preventing the car from achieving peak mpg - a lot of the time it turns out to be MAF/ MAP/ AF/ O2 sensors that are giving the wrong readings, or vacuum leaks / mechanical wear to the spark plugs decreasing combustion efficiency.
unfortunately fords are notorious fuel guzzlers and appear to have been unable to keep up with technology development in that area in comparison to their rivals . Would recommend selling and go for a car with higher MPG .
II have a 2003 Buick Lasaber limited.. I have never had a problem with the car. everything works in the car i have the heads up display. my question is last spring I replaced all the wheel bearings the rear ball joints the ball joints on the top and bottom front ball joints. All the rotors 2 calipers the brake pads the spark plugs The shocks in the rear the struts in the front and the muffler, also put a new gas cap on And new tires and a new battery. The old battery lasted for 9 years years and was still working when I got the new one.
95% of the time I use the car just to go to work which is 30 miles 15 to 15 to work and 15 home.
I was averaging 27.2 miles to the gallon, I have a display on the dashboard.
After I did all work on the car replacing all those items I am now down to 22 miles miles per gallon average.
I gave it a few months as I thought the average would go up but it has not. I reset the computer that shows the average and drove for a month on the new setting and it was averaging 22.1Miles per gallon.
Do you have any idea why it is averaging so low. one of the wheel bearings I could hardly turn it by hand a rear one. I thought this is going to make a big difference, I'll be able to get 28 miles to the gallon average but, no, it's still 22.1 sometimes it goes down to 21.9 but, That could be different weather conditions and different tire temperatures and maybe I go a little bit faster one day than another but I usually go around 58 miles per hour.
Thank you

I would be curious to take a infrared thermometer in check all the rotor discs after a drive. If one is much hotter than the others then maybe your pads are dragging...?
