Looking at 4 different models for purchase new. Looking for advice on quality, reliability, cost of maintenance, and what will hold its value the most.
GMC Canyon AT4
Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport
Nissan Frontier pro 4xo
Ford Ranger Tremor
Reliability and cost of upkeep, it's the Tacoma, no question. Resale, too. "Quality" means different things; in some ways the Tacoma has the best quality, but fit and finish (especially the interior) is not good.
I recently drove a Tacoma with the full intention of buying one. It rode smoother than I expected, but the interior was very cramped and claustrophobic. I planned for it to be the family road-trip car, but there's no way I could spend all day in it. (FYI, I'm 6-foot; taller than average but not exactly a giant.)
I put in an order for a Canyon with the 2.8L diesel (the V6 is OK but not great, and it comes with GM's 8-speed transmission, which is an absolute disaster; the diesel comes with the 6-speed, which is a fine transmission). For a mid-size truck, the Canyon's interior is a relatively nice place to spend time, and much roomier than the Taco. And even though the diesel is not quick, it's a pretty reliable motor. But then GM cancelled my order due to supply chain problems ❗ .
So bottom line, I would go with the Tacoma. But if you're a taller guy and you find the interior too cramped, the Canyon with a diesel would be a viable alternative - if you can find one.
I'm 6'3" so I'm guessing that would be a little cramped. Ha
I don’t know if anyone has ever regretted buying a Tacoma. But if you’re 6’3”, you just might. (Tundra would be ok)

Taco >> Front >= Range >>> Canyon.
The Toyota would be the best one.
TACO allllllllllllllllll the way!
If that is your priority, then go with the Toyota Tacoma.
Well you can honestly get close to Tacoma quality without the Toyota price tag with the Frontier. Obviously Toyota is the better pick and will hold value. IF you were choosing between the Ford or GM I’m sticking with the Ranger. Why? Because although Ford and GM both seem to like dropping the ball on quality control, Ford made the smart move and decided to completely focus on trucks. GM hasn’t done that, they wanted to get their hands in everything to try and please everyone and and that choice has been their demise. So, as I said before yes both companies lack in quality control BUT I’d rather take my chances on the company whose whole purpose is trucks.
What dad2pwd said, the 4cyl duramax is actually a really good engine. I'd choose that if youre looking to do towing. Road test them all to see what ride quality you like.
Is the Hyundai Santa Cruz just too good to add to the list?
